Our virtual dedicated machine hosting uses state of the art technology to deliver the best of both worlds: the control of having your own dedicated server, at the price of a shared server. A dedicated server is a computer that's completely dedicated to your use. Typically a colocated or hosted machine costs hundreds of dollars per month, and may require a substantial commitment up front and/or the outright purchase of a computer up front. These are nonetheless popular because they provide full access to the system, including installing or removing software, and access to system control and configuration files. A shared server typically is very inexpensive, but that decrease in cost comes with many restrictions. Often you can't install additional software, have severe restrictions on additional mailboxes and accounts you may add (if indeed you can add any), and usually you have no access to system files, etc. This hosting alternatives can cost up to $80 per month, for much less flexibility and power than even our entry offering. There are systems which attempt to provide a similar level of functionality through the use of "Jails" -- software environments which give a limited ability for access to system resources on a shared system. Unlike our Virtual Machine, these systems often have slightly unusual configurations or allow some "privileged" access but restrict other common actions.

If you have ever set up your own Linux server, you will be right at home with our virtual server options. You won't believe how much it looks like your own dedicated server. Particularly if you're comfortable with root access on a system, this environment will be just what you're looking for. If you have particular Linux software, you'll be able to install it exactly as you would on your own Linux server. Firewall rules can be installed and modified, ensuring your system remains secure. There are no limitations on system and mail accounts or virtual domains, etc...
